I have not read a single page of, Prince of Thorns, since my first blog post. Just haven’t had the time or opportunities to really sit down and read, therefore, I will be conducting this blog post using the value graphing methods we have learned. I decided to pick the chapter where Jorg returns home to his father’s castle where he was once heir to the throne. I figured this would be a good chapter to use because the first 100 pages of the book lead up to this moment.
-Jorg returns to familiar surroundings and experiences nostalgia(+)
-He wonders f his father will even face him man to man or treat him like his son(-)
-Jorg chokes useful information out of a guard before encountering his father(+)
-Jorg meets his father’s dutiful sorcerer ( Dreamwitch), Sageous, in the library where he finds himself unable to contest with the heathen; Jorg’s name for him(-)
-Jorg wills his mind and body to break free of the heathen’s control and he grabs Sageous by the neck proving his strength to the witch(+)
-Learns about the princess, but is too tired to question about her(-)
-Has nightmare about mother’s death which was implemented by Sageous(-)
-Meets princess and enjoys her company and looks(+)
-Finally confronts father; happily displays contempt(+)
-Father does not even acknowledge him, has Makin, Jorg’s right hand man, duel his own superior knight, Sir Galen(-)
-Jorg saves Makin from eventual defeat and kills Sir Galen himself using quick witted, dishonest deception, proving to his father that he means business(+)
-Father takes notice agrees to inquire with Jorg(+)
Jorg proves that he has not swayed from the controlling value-do whatever it takes to get revenge-and continues to act first and think later. There are opportunities for the opposing value-not avenging family and forgetting about it-to counter Jorg, like letting Makin get killed due to his father’s wishes for an unfair, courtly duel, but Jorg keeps his goal in mind and makes sure that he is recognized as a grown man with ambitious needs, and that he will oppose anyone, even his King father, to get what he wants. Revenge.
